passed two small villages of 
belonging to the Indians.

No service – Close to land 
all day head wind & not making 
more than 4 miles an hour
off Trinidad Bay – Humbolt Bay 
Mendocina City – Called at 
Cresent City at 7- O.C. PM & landed 
some passengers –  285 miles 
from San Francisco – Gaggin 
& Good have a difference of opinion.

Blowing hard off land –

4 miles an hour.  Canadian 
Jew on sentry all night 
expected attack by the

WEDNESDAY 
Anchored outside of bar at the 
mouth of Columbia river at 4- A.M. 
Crossed the bar at 9- O.C. Pacific city 
deserted  – stopped at Astoria & took up 
river pilot, also at St Helens, Ranier 
sighted not St Helens & Mt Hood 
both covered with snow.  Beautiful 
wooded senery all the way.  Entered 
the River Willamette at 8 P.M.  
Arrived at Portland at 9 O.C. P.M.

THURSDAY 
Walked through Portland, 
went out to shoot no sport.  Good 
Gaggin & Ker went to look after 
deer – no go.  Indians fighting one 
man killed –

FRIDAY 
Very wet day – fishing & shooting 
bad sport – Left Portland at 4 P.M.  
Passed the mail boat a short 
way from Portland.  Population 
of Portland about 2000
