South Wind – dusty – Gillet started
for New Westminster with Denourian – Reading
Church at 11- OC Holy Communion – Mrs Charles
& myself & host of miners called – Lonely
day & thinking very much of all at
home. Pringle dined – service at
6½ about 20 attended – Pringle came
again in the evening & remained
till I fell asleep. Indians drunk
& making a great noise. This day
twelve month I sailed from Sanfrancisco in
the Brother Johnathan

Very cold morning
Held court at 10- O.C. Settle House
accounts salary & all other demands with
Finlaison – Collecting for Bridge
Walked with Pringle to Quaquealla
Edward Croft R.E. paid for his Land in
full £26 – (53 acres-)
Wet evening & very cold.

THURSDAY
Showry & very cold morning
Went with Sergt McCall to inspect
the survey of the five acre lots –
Paid Special Constable Rattray in
full to 4th inst. Issued summonses
to Shields against Sutton, – for wages & abusive
language. Charles spent the
evening.

FRIDAY
Cold morning. Mashell shot
some birds with his bow & arrow –
Mrs Thomas lodged complaint against
her husband for striking her & using abusive
language – I am let into the Family secrets
without any censure – Mrs Davis drew an agreement for
them to separate Mrs T receiving $75- per month
Crickmer & family arrived by the Henrietta
& stopped at the Fort – No service
Long letter from the Gov with reference to the

& $150 in the latter

SATURDAY
Cold & wet – Long chat with
Crickmer, he started for Yale at
12- Pringle fidgetty & hard up for a
grievance – & bothered all day about sending
an expedition to Mansons Mountain.
Posted letter to the Capt with reference to
my having drawn for £300, Enclosed No 7-
to Mamsey
. Walked to Quaquealla
to see the Bridge – Charles & Pringle
spent the evening – Mrs C – stopped at the Fort.

Fine morning – Called on Mrs C.
Service at 11- small attendance
Holy Communion – Read
Remained in office
Elliot did not arrive as expected
waited dinner for him – Serviceat 6½ – about twenty attended
Pringle came in the evening –
he & Finlaison differed in opinion
Seymour called – with reference to
the expedition to Similkameen

Cold morning – Crickmer
arrived from Yale en route to
Victoria – Mrs C. came to stop
at the Court House – Mail
sent down by Twain Jeffreys
Express man Crickmer
sent my watch to Westminster
to be repaired – Held court
at 10- AM.

TUESDAY
Fine morning – Finlaison cought
a Lynx at the back of saw mill
Walked over Ninds land with
Sergt McCall – thence up the
Fort Hope creek about 4 miles
capable of being made into a
good waggon trail, returned
at 5½ very tired – hungry – & much
done up – Indian Boy charged by
Davis for trying to pass bad gold dust

Beautiful morning – tired &
stiff from the effects of yesterdays
walk – Took Elliot to see the Bridge
Talked with him about my lots
& got him to draw up Bond for
Uren to sign with reference to the
Bridge – Pringle called on Mrs
Crickmer. Finlaison went to
Cornish Bar to look about land

THURSDAY
Fine morning. Elliot returned to
Yale – Walked with Mrs Crickmer
towards the Quaquealla – Pringle
in a most intense state of fidgets
about the exploration of the Trail, &
set on foot a subscription for that
purpose. Almost quarrelled with
him about the Gov. He called in the
evening & appeared to have forgotten all
about it. The express arrived – at 10 PM.

Up very early – Bad cold & very
hoarse. Mail arrived in Henrietta
at 7- 2 letters from Mamsey & papers
Also heard fr. Dowdale & [Terean] – Enclosure
from Fred – & a long account of his
wedding & Bride – Walked to Bridge
with Charles, Mrs Charles & the Misses
Grey pay Mrs Crickmer a visit
Findlaison found & marked off a
section of Land for himself at Cornish
Bar.

SATURDAY
High wind during the night
Very hoarse – Yates summonsed
for having his Pig trespassing.
Held court – Walked to Quaquealla
with Charles – Tried to write but the
noise was so great that it was
impossible – Worked opposite to
the house for an hour – not at all
well – turned in early.

1860-04-15
SUNDAY
Fine morning – Finlaison arrested
an Indian & seized a quantity of spirit
just as I was going to Church – which
caused me to be very late. Walked
with Pringle & Mrs Crickmer – Wrote
letters – Service at 7 – good attendance
Sat up till very late, writing
letters – Most uncosey day – how
I have been thinking of home all
the day.

MONDAY
Posted letter to Mamsey No 8 –
with reference to sending me clothes &c

Writing in office & comparing
vouchers with Finlaison.
Held Court & dismissed the sum
mons against Thompson fr selling spirits
to Indians. Bought [left
blank] fr Chisholm
Crickmer arrive fr Victoria late
Finlaison not to be found & then cheeky
a good deal out of temper.

1860-04-17
TUESDAY
Wet night & morning – Finlaison
went to Mansons Mountain. Crickmer
started for Yale. His coolness is something
quite wonderful. Hill – (Balls Constable
called). Walked to the Quaquealla Bridge
progressing favourably – Arrange with
Uren to make it 8 feet wide instead
of 6 – the extra lumber to be paid for.
Finlaison returned fr Mansons Mountain
drenched – & report 18 inches of
snow on the trail near the Mountain

Fine morning – Bought fr Chisholm
Lots 2 B 10 – Lot 8 – B 4 – & half of
Lot 4 B 3 – also 15 feet in Lot 2. B, 3.
For which I paid in full $580-00
Walked to the Quaquealla – bridge
progressing most famously –
Such a row as the brats are
making – Cold no better

THURSDAY
Cold showry morning – Could not
sleep all night – Thanking a great
deal about home – . 8 men arrived
from [left blank] on rout to the
Similkameen, they proposed to
wait and accompany our expedition
Crickmer arrived fr. Yale – Henrietta
arrived fr Westminster. Pringle Crickmer
& self walk to Quaquealla, where the cloth
have a decided difference of opinion.

Walked over the extension of the Town
Held Court – Issued Mining licenses
Busy arranging about our start
on Monday – Gave Landvoigt Begbie
order on Hemley for $250 – to pay
Uren – Pringle paid me $82- on
acct of exploration trip – Planted potatoes
& sowed seed in garden. Pringle spent
the evening & decided on going to Victoria

journey is delayed a day –

TUESDAY
Dispatched Satcher & Sheldon again
to Yale in search of Indians – The party
of miners who have been waiting for us
got impatient & start with one Indian
carrying from 60 to 70 lbs. Held court
Walked to inspect the bridge with Reece
& Landvoigt – , Seymour dined
Walked with Allison to the bridge
Sheldon returned from Yale no Indians
to be had.

WEDNESDAY
Fine morning – Cold no better – Allison
very fidgetty – Charles returned from
Langley. Sent Teague with Allison
to examine Quartz lead – In house
nearly all the day. Charles
dined – walked to the lake (Chisholms)
Arranged with Welsh to set my
3 lots with potatoes for $25- he to
find seed. Seymour & Charles
spent evening.
