THURSDAY
Up at 7- . Held Court at 10
in office all day, Steamer
Hope arrived at 2- no mail
but heaps of officials – the
unfortunate prisoner “Wall”
arrived. McKeon the Constable in
charge refused to bring the Prisoner to the
jail – when I interfered & directed him
to do so.

1861-08-02
FRIDAY
Up at 2 AM on board the Hope with Bushby at 3
& did not get away till 5- arrived at Yale
8- AM – Paid Sanders £9- being the full amt due
him. Assizes opened at 11- True Bills formed
against Robt Wall Mack Hegar & two Indians
for the murder of Dr Fifer, all of whom were
found guilty. Wall sentenced to be hung, Hegar
7- years penal servitude, the Indians 1 year
each. Walker appealed against a decision of
Sanders. Called on Crickmer, slept at Sanders.

1861-08-03
SATURDAY
Up at 6- Sanders busy grooming. After
considerable delay – started in a Canoe
with Bushby & Evans for Hope. Evans informed
us that Mr Edney was “on the many” –
roasting hot day. Held Court. Jno McGill
charged by an Indian with selling a squaw
as a slave for $225- $25 worth of blankets
McGill after considerable delay – “disgorged” –
Fire on the trail road close to town. Sat
up late long wa wa with Bushby.

SUNDAY
Up at 6- – McGill & Alex Lane arrested
by Cregie charges with fighting – bail taken
for their appearance tomorrow
Service at 11- 5- present. Most
oppressive day close & sultry –
Evening service at 7- 6 attended. Collection
$1-00 – blowing a regular hurricane
the dust in clouds. The fire increased & approaching
near the town. Pringle in a fright about
it, & running about all night.

Up at 3- started at 5½ beautiful
morning found very little work done to
the trail by Woodside, & that badly executed – passed
Moore at the Canion – also Dewdney train
in charge of Frank Randall. Reached R E
camp at 1½ distance 34 miles. Grant
crusty. Received Nos 10 & 11- fr dearest Mamsey
also one for the Capt & Capt Knox
– besides a load
of officials. [Foster] arrived, soon after having searched
Johny several miles without a shoe. Started & got
home at 11- Met Gompertz at Lake house on route to
Cariboo with whom spent an hour

SATURDAY
Up at 5- [deletion] Very busy all day in
office, found everything in capital order
kept by Craigie during my absence, Recd
fr Capt Gosset £300- in silver per Ballows
express, for which I paid $7-50- – Recd also frm
Charles a bag of money for Grant. Wrote a budget
of letters.

SUNDAY
Beautiful morning – rose at 6- Wrote
to Commeline & dispatched Ebenezer [illegible]
to Yale to execute Robt Wall – convicts of the
murder of Dr Fifer. Service at 11- Mr Dundas
preached a capital sermon – 9- attended
Collection &7-60- Hot to a roasting
Point. Palmer & self dined at 5- Service
at 7- 7- Present. Pringle & Dundas
spent the evening.

1861-08-19
MONDAY
Palmer left for N.W. at 6 AM
Held County Court at 11- having first dispatched
of a number of prisoners mostly squaws –
Paid visits to Mrs Pringle & Charles
Took Dundas Pringle & Charles to fish
a[t] Cañion Quaquealla – & had a cold
dinner. Home at 10- rode over
the new waggon road – beautiful moon
light night. –

1861-08-20
TUESDAY
Up at 7- oppressively hot – In office
till 3 P.M. Pringle & Dundas called
Paid Charles my acct. up to 28th May $137-24 –
Bought fr Thomas S.E half
of L6-B1. – Lots 7- 23 & 24 B2- Suburban land
for $1000- – $150 of which I paid him, the
bal to be paid on 35th Nov. A very cheap lot
I consider.

WEDNESDAY
High wind during the night
Close sultry day – In office. Dewdney
& Sutton called & had a long wa wa about
the races. Promised to attend meeting
in the evening. – Dewdney dined
went with him to Suttons meeting
at 8- where the rules were drawn up
& racing in all i[t]s forms was fully discussed

A good deal of rain
Posted No 13- to Mamsey and
newspapers

FRIDAY
Up at 7- Grant arrived fr the road
just in time for breakfast – how glad I was to
see his jolly old face.

1861-08-24
SATURDAY
Up at 4- Str Moody left at 5- Charles
& self rode with Grant to the McColman.
Paid J.G. £311//18- being the full amt in my
hands on road acct. Held County Court in
at H. Meeting of bridge committee, when it
was decided that I should pay to Uren the full
amt in my hands. Landvoigt paid over on same acct
$25- from B B trail money. Paid my subscription
to the races $25-

SUNDAY
Rose at 6- beautiful morning
Read = Service at 11- 4 attended –
oppressively hot day. Dewdney arrived
by trail fr Yale with Sanders home for the
race, also Deitz & Kimball. Paid Mrs Landvoigt
a visit. Dewdney Dined. Service at 7- 6-
present – Collection $1-50. Took tea at
the Fort. Sat up till 12-

1861-08-26
MONDAY
Rose at 6- Fine cool morning – Cregie
went out to fish – Edmon[d]s exercised Johny
tied up Grants horse. Agreed with George
Watson to burn & cut down all the trees on Ninds
18- acres of land for $110. Left to ride with Dewdney
to Glennies, he got a bad fall of his cream horse, hurt
in eye very much, paid my visit, & afterwards
rode Sanders horse & Pringle Johny to exercise.
Remained with Dewdney who was suffering a good
deal till 11- – Turned in at 12-

1861-08-27
TUESDAY
Up at 6- Beautiful morning. Edmon[d]s
exercised Sanders horse & Johny. Dewdney a
good deal better, but eye bunged up. In office
till one Pringle & Philips left in a canoe for
the 21 mile ranch. Dined with Dewdney. The
racers exercised & not a little excitement with
reference to the coming event. Commeline arrived
from Yale. Tea at the Fort. Turned in at
11- Paid Uren in full bal. on original
contract for Quaquealla bridge $76- Bal in hand $1.00

WEDNESDAY
Found Capt [illegible] horses tied to the pailing
Up at 6- Beautiful morning. Edmonds
exercised Johny, wrote some letters
Great excitement

THURSDAY
English mail Recd No 12- & one fr. the Capt
informing me of his accident & the Mrs illness

The Colonel – Parsons 12 horses & a whole retinue
of servants –

Posted No 14- enclosed to the Capt also one
for Capt Knox – & newspapers
. Busy with
the Colonel & Parsons during most of the
day rode with them in the evening –
