Dearest Child
Miss O’Reilly is too formal today. I have so much to thank you for to begin with. A lovely photo & the pretty views of yr country wh so charming. thank you 1000 times & for the kind sweet thought of me. God bless you dear & give you such a bright happy New Year. & every joy possible & many more. I wish I cd think that I wd see you in this one. but I expect you wont come again year awhile y. parents wont be able to share their bright child so soon again. I am sending you an almanac wh [us to hang up in ts room?] I daresay you have been having a very cheer Xmas time. I have been here with my married boy. & Eddie had a Xmas tree, a good many children. I had a right good time. he did enjoy himself with such a lot of presents of every kind too. he is a dear boy. yes Tatty Masters is a real nice creature. I hear very often from my Harry he is now at Malta refitting – doing up the ship after their year at Constantinople & going off soon to the Red Sea. I am sorry to have him so far but he dislikes Malta very much & is longing to be away himself. His is so much better now wh is a gt comfort. Charlie was here with me for Xmas but is now in Suffolk shooting – we both go home to London & meet there on Monday the 3rd & I shall settle quietly for a time – & take up some work if I can of some sort or sorts to be useful to others & do some good in the world to somebody. it is all much more difficult when one cannot give much. I always long to have plenty of the needful to help in this mais cela ne vieut pas to any amount & we dont abound in this family in big pushes! wh is a bore. We had a day like spring yesterday bright & sunny – delicious only one or two showers & today so raw cold, foggy damp – how it changes here in this country from one day to another. I was at Holme Lacy for 3 nights. the old home was looking so lovely. We have so much yew in hedges & trees all about that it looks so green always. Our tenants are going in Feby I am sorry to say after 9 years & they are a loss. my son has not re-let as yet but we do hope to do so very soon. well dearest I will stop – hope some day ere long I shall hear from you again Har[?] brother settle to go to Klondike. I hope not for yr sakes. May I send a kind [?] to yr Father & Mother & all good wishes.
Yr very affectl
