Very busy writing all morning Str
Flying Dutchman arrived at 3 P.M. her first
trip. 3½ Yale arrived with English
mail. Recd No 20 fr Mamsey which has
been 3 months on the way, one from MacD-
& 3 papers – great disappointment at not
getting one of later date fr home – [Denmans]
letter of introduction. Heard of poor Jno Miles
death the day after his marriage with Miss [illegible]
dined at the Fort, but left early intending to write
but Pringle came & remained till 11- O.C.

SATURDAY
The Str Yale & Flying Dutchman went
to Yale busy in office preparing for the
mail – the Dutchman returned at 3- &
went down Paid the Glennies a visit
rode out. Wrote a whole heap of
letters –
Posted No 2- to Mamsey & newspapers
Sent my receipt for £34//10 – to Luard to get my
Title deed –

SUNDAY
Beautiful day – present from
Mrs Charles. Service at 11- only 5-
attended. Robinson returned from
Similkameen – having made the trip
in two days – he says Dewdney may
be expected tomorrow – Short walk
with Charles – Pitman Orr & [Bramkik]
arrived fr Similkameen. No evening
service. Pitman came down & spent
the evening – very lonely – cannot think
of anything but home

MONDAY
Up at 7- Beautiful morning. Two years
since I left home which appears more like ten
God grant that I may be back before another.
Cannot read or apply myself to anything
Walked with Charles to Ninds Land. Rock Creek
express arrived – letter fr Haynes – Dewdney
returned fr Similkameen. Called on Mr
& Mrs Browning. Gogie went to Yale in
consequence of duty not being paid. Dined at Dewdneys
Came home early & spent a most dreary lonely
evening.

TUESDAY
Fine morning. Not at all well could not sleep
Held Court at 10 A.M. Remained in
all day. Paid Chisholm $55- on the
Bishops account – Glennie & Miss G.
paid me a visit. Browning & Pringle
called. Spent the evening at
Pringles. Met Charles & Pitman –
home early – sat up till 12-

WEDNESDAY
Slight frost – Paid Dewdney $26.00
on acct of the sum lent me. Pitman
called, & remained a long time. Edney called
with reference to a Lot purchased by him from
Hunt L4 – BX1. – Paid Landvoigt the
amt of Dewdney’s order $26-00.
Held Court – & issued a number of
summonses – Pitman & Gompertz

FRIDAY
Fine morning. Held Court. Wrote
some letters. Chinamen mustered
in great force – “Their New Years day”
fireworks – feasts &c &c – chickens bought
by them at $3 & 4 each – short walk
with Charles – He & Pringle spent the
evening – just as I was going to bed Glennie
& Dewdney came in. G. wanted us to go
out & have a dance. – Steamer expected
but did not come – turned in at 11½ –

SATURDAY
Robbery of Blankets bedding &c fr H. Grey
4 Indians arrested on suspition. Frost
during the night. Held Court at 10- A.M.
Steamer Yale & Flying Dutchman
arrived at 5- P.M. Recd No 22 from Mamsey
also one fr. Richd Williamson – and my
box – everything quite safe. Constable Edmonds
returned fr Westminster – Wrote some
letters. Heard of Portmans death – spent the evening at the Fort – met Anderson –
Moberly arrived

SUNDAY
Up at 7- cold raw morning – both Steamers
left for Yale. Service at 11- 8- attended
busy in office nearly all day
Landvoigt called to say he was going
to Victoria – Gave him an order on
Burnaby for £500- (Capt Knox’s-) No
evening service Dined with Dewdney
Str Hope arrived & reported that a
dead body had been discovered at the
20 Mile Ranch.

MONDAY
Rain & sleet The Hope went to Yale. The
Yale came down at 9- Cregie took a
canoe & board & went in search of the dead
body reported to have been seen yesterday –
Landvoigt went down. Dewdney commenced
the waggon road Glennie turned the first
sod & made a speech – Champagne galore
Walked with Pitman to the Bishops
Lake – Pitman spent the evening –

TUESDAY
Fine morning up at 7- Held Court at
10- Edmonds fined $10- for assault on P.
[Druff]. Inquest on the body brought up
yesterday – which turned out to be Harrison White
Coe’s partner. Post Mortem examination by Dr
Bradshaw which ended in his discovery that
his head had been fractured & that death had
ensued immediately. Inquest adjourned to
enable us to procure since further evidence for
Westminster. Cregie left at 8- PM in a canoe
[overwritten text]
for Westminster
to procure the evidence
required. Pouring

may get safe
He is certainly
deserving of great
credit & promotion
which I will try to get
for him

WEDNESDAY
Rained all night – up at 6. The body
of Harrison White was intered. Pringle officia-
-ted. Reece stated to me that the Indians
had admitted having seen the body with a rope
round it & had taken from the pockets three
keys, knife, & $1– Called on Coe examined the
box pointed out by Coe as being Whites, & found
the key fitted. Const Edmonds proceeded down the river
and discovered a coat which is identified as
Whites. On information of Const Edmonds
issued warrant and had Coe arrested on
suspition

THURSDAY
Fine morning up at 6- Wrote some
Letters. Davis paid his duty on 10 tons
of freight. Nothing further discovered
with reference to White. Walked with
Charles to Ninds land. Moor lodged compla-
int against Dewdney for not runing
the road as laid out by the Sgt McCall, and
interfering with his house & land. Item
expected but did not come. Posted No 3
to Mamsey with enclosure to Tom – also one to
Williamson

FRIDAY
Fine morning. In office all day
Constable made Edmonds made
further inquiries & search for evidence
in the case of White – with the exception
of a letter written by Coe from Westminster
on the 19th Decr – nothing of importance
Remained in office all day. Wrote
some letters &c. Mr & Mrs Browning
paid me a visit. No steamer
arrived contrary to expectation.

Sunday – Horrid wet & cold
morning a good deal of snow during
the night. Service at 11- 6- attended
Dewdney came down & spent the whole day
He Gompertz & Moberly dined. Str Yale arrived
at 7½ – English Mail Recd No 23 fr. Mamsey
with a whole batch of officials. Collection
of Road toll again stopped. Cregie arrived
in Canoe Recd by him £20- fr Luard for the
Hope & Chilwahook trail.

MONDAY
Up at 6- Very Busy morning. Str Maria arrived & left
again for Westminster. Adjourned inquest met
at 10- at 4 adjourned till 5- & did not finish till
12½ – Verdict H. White murdered by some person
or persons unknown between the 3rd & 9th of Decr
Coe discharged – a very strong feeling existing
against him. Richd Gee attempted to commit
suicide by jumping into the river of the Maria
had him arrested – very tired turned in at 1 A.M.

TUESDAY
Up at 7- Charles left for Victoria in the Yale
sent down Richd Gee in charge of Sacket to
Westminster Jail. Sent by the Parson (Bernard)
$40- to be handed to Prichard the Jailor for Gee
Wrote to the Gov a report of the inquest, sent
Luard Rect for £20- brought up by Cregie. Rode
with Glennie & Dewdney to Glennies. Miss not
quite so pert as usual. Bad head ache, seedy
all day. Recd letter fr. Ball by express

Very cold night. Bad head ache
In office – docketing old letters
Went to Ninds land with Cregie to
measure it. Pringle & Pitman joined
us, cut down a huge tree –
Pringle & Pitman spent the
Evening. Robinson & Smith
returned, having failed to get across
the mountain in consequence of the
snow being so deep.

THURSDAY
Lay in bed till 10- not at all well
paid Mrs Charles a visit. Wrote
letters Dewdney called – Paid
Browning & wife a visit.
Paid McDonell on Ninds acct
$60- spent a most lonely
evening – turned in at 9-
cannot help thinking of home, as
my letter will arrive about this
time.

FRIDAY
Walked with Dewdney. Hooper
& Cregie to survey Ninds land
Wrote some letters. Str Dutchman
arrived at 2 P.M. Complaint made
by two coloured men against the Capt
Rode to Ninds land & chopped some
trees down. The Yale arrived, no mail
reported the Maria to be aground, about
Jeffreys bar. The Dutchman went to Yale
Landvoigt returned in the Yale

SATURDAY
The Dutchman returned to N.W. The Yale
tried to get up but had to put back & dis-
charge part of her cargo. In office
nearly all day – writing & expecting the
mail which is said to be on the Maria.
Called on Mrs Charles. Had an
interview with Landvoigt & Hotchin with
reference to the collection of Road Toll.

SUNDAY
The Yale went down. Mail sent off.
Service at 11- 6 attended. Remained
in house all day – came on to rain
heavily about 1. P.M. Gompertz called
Service at 7 P.M. Collection $2-12½ only 4 present.
Mrs & Mr Pringle spent the evening with me.
Read & turned in at 10- having
spent a lonely day. How I wish I had
an answer to my Letter.

MONDAY
Heavy rain during the night
The Maria arrived in a disabled state
Paid McDonell $80- on Ninds acct
Rode along the new Road to Glennies
Mrs G. looking very ill. On the way home
saw Dewdneys horse & cart in the ditch
sent some men to assist in getting him out
Pringle & Anderson dined. Landvoigt
called in the evening with memorial
about the road tax.

TUESDAY
Str Maria left for Westminster early
beautiful day Walked with Pringle &
helped him to cut down some trees, on the
river side. Set Edmonds to clean about
the place. Spent the evening at
Pringles – walked home with Mrs Charles
Dewdney called on his way fr. Glennies

WEDNESDAY
Beautiful morning. Went up river
in Canoe with Cregie on Gold Commiss
duty – afterwards walked down the Slugh
past Croft Island & visited some China –
mens claims. Cregie decided on preempting
a small stripe of land joining Sergt McCalls
Walked up through Ninds land. Very
Seedy. Went to the Fort but returned &
went to bed at 8- P.M. Posted No 4

THURSDAY
Fine morning Dewdney called
rode with him to his Camp on the
Waggon road. Lounched at Glennies
heard some music then home & rode
to Ninds land with Dewdney. Went to
the Fort but soon recd a message from
Gompertz to say he wanted me – found him &
Hooper waiting. The former informed me
that he had decided on leaving Dewdney &
taking up house for himself.
