Dear Miss O’Reilly
Many thanks for your letter of Janry 25th. You must not be indignant with the Admiralty for not promoting me. They could’nt do it without a special order-in-Council as I have not 2 years sea time – 12 days short of it. Al my work at the Admiralty from 1895 to ‘98 counts for nothing according to Naval regulations. I’m afraid I do not see much chance of immediate employment unless something unexpected turns up. I should not mind waiting if one only knew when one might be wanted as I should like in the mean time to go abroad somewhere but I might lose my chance if I was’nt on the spot. As it is it keeps one hanging round. I saw the Wards and Mrs. Olivier the other day. A small girl has been born to our family & they dont know what to call her. There have been no female Stanhopes for so long. We are 6 brothers, and my father had 7 – no sisters. We are having a mild winter, but there is a cold East wind now. I hope all are well with kindest remembrances
