Dear Miss O’Reilly
Many thanks for your kind letter. Yes, it is a sad fact that my last chance for promotion has gone & I feel a disappointed kind of outcast, a family failure to be pointed at with scorn by all. I did not think I stood much chance, knowing how much age has to do with it. I am starting for the North on 4 Aug & glad to get away to the country. I dont know for how long, as I must see about the future and what I can get to do. Whether some home appointment on shore, which rather rankles, or cut it altogether & begin some other life. it is rather a struggle beginning again at 45. I hope the baths will do your father permanent good & that you will be able to get away from Aix soon.
Ever yrs sincerely
Harry Stanhope
