My dear Miss O’Reilly
Thank you so much for your letter. I could’nt quite make out if you had sent the bulbs, but no doubt they will arrive in due course. I’m sorry you have been having such a bad summer. in England it has been quite extraordinary – proper rain will not come. It has been such a week of functions. I took a cousin to the [?]Club to see the processions & to the war office afterwards to see the going away one. The decorations were wonderful especially St. James Street. I had enough of the illuminations at night in 10 minutes. The [?] in Piccadilly nearly killed me, & I was glad no lady was with me. I was at the State Hall last night & now a season of rest will set in. The manoeuvres begin today. I am going to Queenstown to do Intelligence work for the Enemy. when the war begins I shall be at it day & night, as I am the only one but it wont last over a fortnight. You will have seen that Sir Michael goes to command the Mediterranean. I saw him at the Marlborough House Garden Party, & I dont think he cares too much about it. still as he says it is a great honour but it must be unpleasant for him to start his command with the courts martial that must be held over that dreadful disaster. I have seen Admr Hotham Capt Lambton & Jones, Sir Robert & Mr . Williamson most of them have had influenza – they were all lunching at the Club the other day in full dress before going to the levee. I hope you will find some pleasant acquaintances among the “Royal Arthurs”, I think they seemed a very good lot. With kind regards to all of yours & yourself. ever yrs very sincerely
Harry Stanhope
