Fine morning, but very wet under foot, A
succession of Visitors – Remained in house
writing letters. Helmering called in re a
refreshment room for Theatrical company
expected fr Victoria. Posted letters to Elliott
Coulson – feathers for George Arthur
Recd fr Crickmer $50 per Jeffreys Express
Paid Cregie $50- on acct. Dined at Pringles
lent him $20- Spent a stupid evening
I wonder if I shall get home before next new
years day.

Some snow & frost during the night
Maria left for Westminster sent down prisoner
Atune (Chinaman) in charge of Cregie, sent
$111-00 duty on cattle to Hamley. Pringle
Glennie Edney &c &c went down. Paid
a visit at Glennies Charles & self dined
with Gompertz who was full of speculations
as ever Home early – Read & turned in

THURSDAY
A good deal of snow fell during the
night. Busy all day investigating the
murder case, with no likelihood of
getting sufficient evidence against
the Prisoner Pelqualuns.
Dined at Dewdney’s – met Glennie
Charles Hotchin Landvoigt & Gompertz
spent a pleasant evening – Dewdney in
great force, & astonished us all by the tricks
he performed – home at 12-

FRIDAY
Heavy fall of snow during the night
Constable Goudie returned to Yale. In
office investigating the murder case. Str
Yale arrived Recd letter from dearest
Mamsey without number
. Pringle returned
a whole heap of letters. Got my stove up
but dont like it. Glennie & Miss G. paid me
a visit their Piano arrived. Dined at the
Fort. Pringle came in, & gave us all the
news. Posted letter to the Capt with I.O.U. enclosed
also No 1 to Mamsey

1861-01-19
SATURDAY
Slight frost. The Steamer went to Yale
at 8½ returned at 2 PM – & went down
Gave Dewdney the balance of his money
in my hands. Smith called upon me
with reference to keeping open the trail
to the Similkameen. Asked Landvoigt &
Hotchin to come up & talk the matter
over, but were interupted by Gompertz
& Pringle making their appearance.

1861-01-20
SUNDAY
Very cold morning – Service at 11-
only 6- attended. Paid Dewdney a visit
& found him & Gompertz drinking mulled Port.
Smith Hotchin & Landvoigt called again
about the trail, & decided on calling a meeting
of the inhabitants for the next evening. Discharged
the Prisoner Pelqualuns in the morning – Recd
a note fr. Landen & took the evidence of an other
Indian on which he was again arrested.
No evening service – Spent an hour with Landvoigt

1861-01-21
MONDAY
Hard frost skating opposite the Indian
village. Walked with Charles to Ninds
land saw McDonell & Ennis at work
Investigation continued on the murder
case. The evidence by no means
satisfactory. Attended meeting in the Court
house to devise plans to open the trail
to Similkameen. Adjourned till next
evening to ascertain what money can be
collected & the probable expense.

1861-01-22
TUESDAY
Dewdney slept & breakfasted, hard frost
drove sleigh to Glennies, & got wet in crossing
the slue. The Piano a very good one & in
perfect tune, remained till 4 – the ladies
very gracious – Meeting at 6½ – after a
good deal of wa wa, it was decided that
a Committee be appointed to expand the
monies as best they can in opening the
trail & that I request the Governor to
make up the bal required.

1861-01-23
WEDNESDAY
About 6 inches of snow fell during
the night. Dewdney & Gompertz called in during
the night office most of the day. Called on
Landvoigt with reference to Urens acct
for Bridge. Called on Mrs Charles
Short walk with Pringle. Dined at
the Fort.

1861-01-24
THURSDAY
More snow – Held Court – Dewdney started for
the Similkameen taking with him Chisholm
& 3 Indians. Recd fr Pringle $55- the
subscriptions of Lempriers Nind & himself
to the Quaqualla bridge. Paid Mrs Pringle a visit
Pringle held a convocation meeting at Crows house & appointed
delegates, Chisholm & Thompson. The man is I believe mad
he afterwards came up to me & said that
Yankees & all should have a voice in such things
Charles & Gompertz spent the evening.

1861-01-25
FRIDAY
Thaw & Rain. Robinson left for the
Similkameen, having arrived the last
Evening. Wrote some letters
and remained in house all
day spent the evening at the
Fort – horrid lonely

1861-01-26
SATURDAY
Heavy rain during the night
streets in a perfect sea of slough
Walked with Charles to the Bishops
Lake. Pringle & Gompertz spent the
evening, & had sundry slight differences
of opinion.

1861-01-27
SUNDAY
Thaw & rain – Service at 11- 8- attended
Gave Charles some chloroform –
In house all the day, Mail
expected, but did not arrive –
Charles & Gompertz dined, Pringle called
to say there would not be afternoon service
Charles & Gompertz left at 7- quite sorry I
asked them – in horrid low spirits – spent a
most lonely evening did not turn in till
12½ –

MONDAY
Snow disappearing very fast. Davis
called about the rent of my house, which
I think he wants to do me out of. Glennie
& Miss G. Paid me a long visit, walked out
with them dined, & had a dance in
the evening, the first I have had with
a female since I left home, walked
home, & turned in at 12½ –

1861-01-29 *
TUESDAY
Slight frost, snow nearly all gone
Held Court. Pringle called and would
have me go out with him, walked to
Ninds land. P. most fidgetty about
Corporal House preemption, however
he assured me that he is determined
to have a son yet. Walked with
Gompertz & Charles to the Bishops land
Found Glennie in possession on my return
Finished reading “Love me little love me Long”
by Chas Reade

1861-01-30
WEDNESDAY
Str Hope arrived & went to Yale with large mail
but no English letters. A whole heap of
officials. Recd a supply of Stationary
from the Treasury – Report of dead body
having been seen in the river – sent Cregie to the
place but could not discover anything – Const
Edmonds went to W Minster in charge of Prisoner
Latiago Alvarez. A Subscription raised for Mr Campbell
frost bitten on his way fr. Similkameen, to enable him to
go to Hospital. Glennie called – wrote out my
requisitions &c &c – spent an hour at the Fort
& turned in.

1861-01-31
THURSDAY
Soft rain during the night snow
disappearing very fast. Walked
with Pringle to Ninds Land, as
usual he was fidgety & bothered me
not a little about Corporal House Lands
Paid Gompertz & Charles a visit
walked to the Big lake – found Glennie
waiting on my return & spent a most
idle day. Can not do anything
my thoughts all day on home.
