FRIDAY 
Up at 4 – started at 5-  Breakfasted 
at 8- Uncomfortable day – Rained nearly 
all day.  Passed the Gov Douglas at 
the mouth of Sumass River, Camped 
at the mouth of Harrison river at 5- turned 
in at 8- almost devoured by musketoes 
Cary in particular.

1859-07-02
SATURDAY 
Up at 3 – started at 4 – Breakfasted 
at the entrance of Harrison lake 
beautiful spot – Waterfall bathed, [illegible]  
cards – singing – Called at fishing 
station, scenery magnificent.  Camped 
at 5- close to waterfall – delightful spot
Cary & Bushby sketch tent and 
indians – no musketoes – turned 
in to blankets a[t] 9-

MONDAY 
Up at 7- Bathed 
on trail with Grant – Rode 
mule to see Baylegate – 4 mile house
Begbie Grant Seddal & Bushby accept 
visitation to Yankey spread – American 
Independence – Firing off guns all 
night.

1859-07-05
TUESDAY 
Up at 6 – Bathed
Court of Assize opened at 10-
Indian squaw convicted of Robbery 
& sentenced to 3 months imprisonment
Went out fishing on lake – no go
Singing – & cards – all challenge 
by Centry – & passed as the Judge.

1859-07-06
WEDNESDAY 
Up at 6- Bathed
Went to Marine Camp, Baylegate 
returned with me steamer expected – bathed 
again Bayle – returned to Camp 
Cards – & singing jolly evening 
Nothing heard of steamer

1859-07-07
THURSDAY 
Up at 6.  Bathed and 
Breakfasted with Grant – went on 
trail & felled trees – Miners arrive 
Good news from Canon river – Went 
out fishing with Begbie & Grant 
no sport – No news of steamer.

1859-07-09
SATURDAY 
Up at 6- walked to 
Marines Camp to Breakfast, 
Baylegate returned – Cary sketched 
Charly Wellington chief of war tribe & 
little Squaw – with Pappouch – Steamer arrived 
at 11½ – Gammage on board – dreadful account of 
passage – remained chatting with Grant till 3 A.M.

TUESDAY 12
Tuesday – Begbie & Party started for Yale 
at 3- OC.  Bargaining for lot from 
Smith. – Man found d[r]owned in River
Steamer left at noon – blowing hard 
arrived at Langly at 6 P.M.  
a heap of letters – answer from Capt 
Woodruff – Horse returned to Farm

WEDNESDAY 13
Up at 6 – could not bath musketoes 
so troublesome, Working at accts – 
Boat high & dry.  Heard four cases 
Tea at Crickmers.  Wrote letters 
could not sleep from musketoes
Duff sick, Lipsitt discharged & 
paid to & for this day

at 2- PM – Crickmer called
refused to sign petition on which 
he departed in disgust – Wet day
Musketoes unbearable
Steamer expected but did not come

Nicol & Henry go up to Douglas – Visited 
the sene of the late fire at the 
Fort.  Reported the circumstance to 
the Gov sent it per Beaver.

1859-07-28
THURSDAY 
Attended Court.
Writing letters – Worked in the 
Garden – Went to the Fort with 
Crickmer – settled dispute 
between Mrs Lawless & Mrs Winnand
Tea at Crickmers Nelly howling 
as usual

Intensely Hot – Mosquito’s 
unbearable – In house all
