MONDAY
Up at 5 – busy writing & making up
accounts – Pringle called & as usual very
fussy. The China men not being able to
agree about their fare to Yale – Marched
off in files by the B. B. trail – a queer turn out
Portman went off to try his hand fishing
but found it no go. Paid 4 of the men who
had been employed on the Boston Bar trail
Smith arrived with his train of pack
mules – very busy day –

1860-07-03
TUESDAY
Up at 6- Steamer started at 10 AM
walked with Portman to see Corporal
House at work – writing the greater
part of the day – & preparing to turn
out for Col. Moody & family – Portman
accompanied Corporal House on the
Survey – Walked with Portman in the
evening to see Ninds land – Dined late
Charles spent the evening – during
the night several guns were fired
by the Yankees – Recd invitation fr. the Yankees
which I declined.

THURSDAY
Thursday – Up at 6- writing
letters, held court – disputes
about mining claims. Edwards &
Pinchbeck & Molony A – Sammon
& Wade – busy getting my
traps removed into the tent
to make way for the Moodys
Portman cought a small dish of
trout Moberly returned fr Yale
The Sergt Major arrived.

FRIDAY
Very stormy night – tent nearly blown
away – Up at 6 – Bad head ache
Pringle [deletion] the town council call
with reference to the price charged by
the Government for timber. obliged to go
to bed very seedy. Portman & Moberly go
to explore for Quartz – Rode to Ninds
land – bought a salmon on the way
back. Pringle & Charles spent the
Evening.

1860-07-07
SATURDAY
Up at 6- beautiful morning, head
still very bad. Made up accounts
Pringle went to Yale – Scott & Eli returned
fr Similkameen very good news from
Rock Creek 2 miles beyond Okinaggon
lake. Miners making $40- per day.
Ogden arrived & Reported the Brigade
to be at the 2nd crossing – Elliot
arrived & held his court – Committed
Richmond – Elliot Moberly & Portman
dined & slept.

1860-07-08
SUNDAY
Up at 6- B. B. C. Brigade arrived
at 8-
McLean McKenzie – 221
horses – A novel sight – poor [beards]
in a most horrid state.
No Service – Pringle at Yale.
Read – Busy preparing to
start the mining expedition to the
Similkameen – Service at 6 – 21
attended. Steamer expected but
did not arrive. H.B.C. official arrested
for drunkness – much to the disgust of the
[Tighees]

1860-07-09
MONDAY
Up at 6- Wrote letters. Attended
Court at 10- Henrietta Maria arrived at
1- P.M. with 300 China men on
board, & returned immediately. Pringle
presented the memorial against the
Cutting ½ dollar per cord charged on
wood cut on Government land. The Gov
Douglas arrived at 6- Col Moody & family
on board – Dallas – Myloe & family & about [left blank]
more China men. The Col. took up his quarters
at the Court House

1860-07-10
TUESDAY
The horse nearly pulled down the tent
during the night. Musquitoes very
troublesome. The Col. & Mrs Moody
almost in despair. Steamer left at
1- P.M. Recd money safe fr. Gosset
Luard – Sent £300- for L. & Works,
Boston Bar Trail – & Pay of Engineers.
Pringle withdrew his petition. Paid
Sheldon & the men who worked with him
on the Boston Bar Trail.

1860-07-11
WEDNESDAY
Up early, busy in office held court
Rode with Alan to see Ninds land
Paid visit at the fort – Walked
with the Colonel & Mrs Moody.
McDole returned & reported the
accident of the man being
injured in getting over Mansons
Mountain – Sent Alexander –
to attend to her & bring her horse
if possible.

THURSDAY
Wrote letters – In house most of
day – dined with the Colonel
& long chat with him very
wet day – went in the evening
with Landvoigt to fish but could
not get a rise. Thomas lodged
complaint against – Thorne
Spent the evening with the Col.
Thinking a great deal about home

1860-07-13
FRIDAY
Up early went to Union bar
on Gold Commission duty – on
my return found the Str Gov Douglas
Begbie Bushby Trutch & mail
Recd No 9- fr Mamsey & 2 papers
Begbie in bad humour at being shut out of
the Court House. Rode with Colonel
Trutch commissioned me to purchase
2 lots for him & that he would $300
Miss Toy lodged complaint against Samuel
Cohen – for an attempt upon her daughter only 7- yrs.

1860-07-14
SATURDAY
Up nearly all the night with Begbie – He &
Bushby started at 8- for Yale – Held Court
Fined Cohen $20- & to find Bail -In office
Long chat with the Col with reference to
the Rocky Knoll on the opposite side
of the Quaquealla – for which he paid £5//0/
The Str Gov Douglas left for N.W.M. at
3 AM Trutch & the wife left for Victoria.
Got the horse’s shoes examined.
Rode to Dallas lake – Tea with the Moodys

1860-07-15
SUNDAY
Up at 7- Read – Service at 11- 18
attended – Walked with the Col. & Mrs
Moody – Wrote to the Gov & made
up my accts for Gosset. Service
at 6½ – 25 attended Collection $5.10
Walked with the Col. & arranged with
him that I was to start for Boston Bar
in the morning. Spent the evening
at the Fort – Ogden & McLean – a rum
pair – Simpson as usual – Glorious –

1860-07-16
MONDAY
Very wet night – could not start for
Boston bar in consequence. Fire in
Engineers camp which might have
been cerious. Rode with the Colonel
to see his preemption & walked over
the mountain to the drift wood
crossing, a very rough road – on return
found the Str Gov Douglas had arrived
Dewdney & Lee – Dined with the Col. heard
of Spaldings appointment as Post Master
& scandal of Heaton & Mrs D –

1860-07-17
TUESDAY
Up early – Held court at 11- OC
Evan’s Pack train left for Boston Bar
one of his mules broke it’s leg on the
trail. In office busy at accounts
The steamer left N W Minster
Rode with the Colonel to lake
Felt lonely all the day, cannot think
of anything but Home.

1860-07-18
WEDNESDAY
The Steamer Gov Douglas left for N.
W.- Minster. Begbie returned from
Yale – grumpy at not being able to
get information about the sale
Pack train left for the Similkameen
Rode with the Colonel – who is as
immaginary as ever.

1860-07-19
THURSDAY
Supreme Court opened at 11- O.C.
no business to be done – Sale of Suburban
lots – Dewdney auctioneer bought 10
for my self 3 for the Captain & 2
fr. Trutch. The Brigade left for
Kamloops – Early dinner with the
Col. afterwards rode with him &
Dewdney – to 2nd Crossing of Quaquealla
to select the starting point of the
trail to Similkameen – The Col. [pretty]
considerably done up.

1860-07-20
FRIDAY
Horrid night Col. Moodys horse almost
pulled down my tent. Begbie played
some practical jokes. Held Court
Gov Douglas arrived at noon – Mayne
of the Plumper arrived and Nind arrived.
No letters – Richmond made an
application to Begbie under the market
Court. Constable Campbell arrived fr Lytton
with warrant for arrest of Parton
charged with the murder of David Barr

1860-07-21
SATURDAY
Str Gov Douglas left at 3- O.C.
Up at 4- Went to Victoria Bar with
Nind to settle disputes with some China
men. Called at Union Bar returning
The hottest day we have had during
the summer. Held Court at 11½
Pringle & Nind dined rode to see
Dewdneys Camp at second crossing
He commenced the trail to Similkameen
Home very late. Letter from Allison
good account from miners.

1860-07-22
SUNDAY
Campbell (Constable) called early
with reference to his proceeding to
Rock Creek, & reported that Parton
had been seen going in that direction
Church at 11- 25- attended. Lunched
at the Fort. A good deal of Thunder.
Service at 11- Collection $1.50
Pringle & Nind spent the evening
& sat up till late. Bathed with
Nind in the Hope creek

1860-07-23
MONDAY
Oppressively hot – bad head ache
Str Gov Douglas arrived at 12- noon
Small mail – Gosset returned my accts
for alteration such a little humbuging
crochety little fellow. Moberly & Portman
arrived the latter poor fellow not a little
disappointed at not getting an appointment
dined at Thomas’ with Nind Pringle
& Portman Blowing a perfect hurricane
& dust most unpleasant heavy rain &
thunder storms

TUESDAY
Up early wrote to the Gov – Str
left at 9- O.C. – Another Pack
train 11- packs left for Similkameen
Held Court – – In office all
day – Helping Nind to brush up

WEDNESDAY
Smiths Pack trains left
for Boston Bar – Held Court
busy in office – Nind in
fuss about his baggage &
at not being able to get away.

1860-07-26
THURSDAY
Up early – Visited the bars from
Strawberry Island down – a good
many China men at work, but
nearly all the white men have left
for the Similkameen.
The Col. Moody arrived at 11 PM. Mail
& letter from Mamsey No 10- with enclosure
from the Capt & Col –

FRIDAY
Str left at at 1- P.M. with
mail. Held Court – Walked
with Nind to see his land
In office – fairly beseiged by
miners making enquiries about
Similkameen & &c
Nind preempted

1860-07-28
SATURDAY
Knocked up at 5- by Fred Bibel who
lodged complaint against Wm Manning fr
stealing $245- from him at Twenty five mile flat
Issued warrant – Bible started in pursuit
with Teague (Constable) and nearly got
drowned – lost his clothes & was obliged to
return. Rode with the Colonel Moody
Inspect the Similkameen trail.
The Bishop & Sheepshanks arrived fr
Boston Bar – Seizure of smuggled goods at
Thomas.

1860-07-29
SUNDAY
Nind slept
Beautiful morning – Service
at 11- in Hontoons old store. The
Bishop preached a capital sermon
35- attended. Walked with the Bishop
Thinking a great deal of home, they have
no doubt been at Cappagh – Elliot arrived
Service at 6 PM Sheepshanks preached
27- attended – Collection $5.60 – Str arrived
Begbie, Bushby, Seddal, & Hamley – Begbie slept
out.

MONDAY
Dearest Chaws B-day
Called up at 2 AM by Charles – The mistress
in a delicate situation – Called Seddal – Elliott
Court – Scott v. Coe – at which Mr Scott
distinguishes himself & gets a [illegible]
Settled Sheriffs fees with Elliot. E. returned
to Yale – Mrs Charles confined – Hamley
quite overcome by the attractions of Miss
Gray & consequently makes an ass of himself
Very busy day – but could not
keep my thoughts from Home.
