Fort Hope at 9 P.M. Horse got

Begbie & Bushby waiting.

Very busy day – Deputation waited on
H.E. to complain of Begbie [illegible]
Indian evidence in the case of Wm
Marshall – Walked about with the
Col – to the Barrack reserve & over
Town lots – Afterwards with the Bishop
to select a sight for burial ground.
Block 1 – Lot 1- which was approved
of by H.E. Large dinner party
given by the Gov. – rode to 2nd crossing
with the Col.

dined – Walked to Dallas lake with
the Bishop Fin & Pringle – Col Moody
recorded the land between the two lakes

THURSDAY
Up early held Court at 10 – heard
of the upseting of a canoe at Victoria
Bar – Long ride with the Bishop in
search of some land for him.
Mr Gray fell off of his boat near
Emerys bar, & nearly drowned. Tea at
Pringles to meet the Bishop &
Hotchins – when the duties of Church
Wardens were fully explained by his
Lordship – Finlaison at the Fort.

The Bishop left for Yale in a
canoe – at 7- O.C. Beautiful morning
Held Court at 10 O.C. Busy in
office – Finlaison & Teague went to
Cornish Bar to look after some land
but found it flooded – Rode over Ninds
land with Thomson. Str Col. Moody
arrived – only a few letters. Mr Reed came
up to look for the appointment of Constable
Finlaison went on board the Steamer

Court at 10 O.C. In office receiving
Trading licences & Recording claims
& made up account for Treasurer
to 31st March. Walked with Mrs
Charles & Blinkensop. Paid him
on account of Bridge $250.

Fine morning Read – Service
at 11- 18 attended. Pringle preached
on the observance of the Saboth – The
9 miners chosen to explore the
Similkameen called to say they
wished to start – but it was decided
they should wait till the Gov returned fr
Yale. Recd a letter fr Col. Moody
Service at 6- 21 attended Mrs
Gray provided their harmonium

Up at 6 – wet morning – Agreed
with 7- men to clear the burial ground
to be paid at the rate for $3- per day.
Pringle fusey & applied fr. a summons to
recover a stolen dog. Thwains Express
arrived fr Yale letter fr Good to say the
Gov would come down on Wednesday
Letter fr the Gov with reference to Exploration of
Trail to Necalaim river & duty of ½ cent per lb on
goods to be packed over the Boston Bar trail.
Rode to burial ground – 4 men at work ½ day.

Up early – held court at 10- Rode to
Ninds claim. Kelly & Partner commenced to
clear – Afterwards rode to burial ground
In office from 1- to 6. PM – Recd package
fr Gov. to be forwarded to Colonial Secretary
Long talk with the Traders with reference
to the proposed duty of which they dont
approve – Working in garden – Tea
at Charles – Met Pringle & Miss Gray
there – Turned in at 11 O.C.

WEDNESDAY
Up at Six – Got the whole town brushed
up in expectation of His Excellencys
arrival. He did not come – Rode to Qua
quealla, & afterwards to burial ground.
The men getting on very well. The horse
showed symptoms of sickness, found
him suffering fr sore throat, applied
mustard linament. Secured a supply
of grass for him from Greenwood Island.
Pringle called & recorded 2 claims of

Long talk with Town people with

agreed upon. Town Council proposed &
acceeded to by H.E. Charles dined

future. Walked with Col Moody & the
Gov to Bridge. Col Moody dined & slept

a decided difference of opinion

broken down below Cornish bar the
previous evening – Letters from Mrs & Colonel
Moody – Stewart Mr & Mrs Gammage arrived
breakfasted at 8- before
which the Bishop

Steamer left at 12- noon. – The Bishop &
Crickmer left for Yale at 10- – Posted No
10 to Mamsey – Held Court.

Busy preparing for my start to
Boston Bar. Finlayson called

fr Mamsey – How very thankful I am for
such good news.

MONDAY
Up at 4- Left for Boston B. Trail with
Hotchin at 5- Drove one Pack horse
with our blankets &c – reached Cedar
Creek at 11½ – distance 15 miles
fed & rested the horses for an hour &
half. Met 2 miners Nickerson & Bonell
returning to Gold flat. Found the trail all
up the mountain very bad – from 3 to 4 feet
of snow on the mountain reached the Camp
after incredible difficulty at 8- horses greatly
done up no feed – my horse very lame. Turned
in to Tent at 10 P.M. with 9- men. Heavy rain

TUESDAY
Up at 6- The horses shivering & in a wretched
state it having rained on them all night
notwithstanding which they fed pretty well
Started with Sheldon & Hotchin for
Andersons River at 8-. The trail very
good but will require trifeling repair in
many places. The party appear to have
worked well – directed Sheldon to explore
route fr Rocky point to 2nd Cedar Creek
Observed Valley bearing N.E. likely to lead to
Nicholas River – distance travelled 36- miles

WEDNESDAY
Up at 6- packed & got under way at 7- Snow
going off very fast – & road cleared to nearly
the summit – snow about 4 feet deep
hard & easily got over – arranged with
Sheldon to send him an Indian & [provisions]
on my return. Trail bad from summit
to base of mountain & will require a good
deal of work for about 9- miles.
Stopped at Golden Flat & had a cup of Tea
with miners, arrived at hope 7½ – 38 miles

THURSDAY
Up early found the horse suffering
a good deal from the effects of the late
work he had done. Held Court. Arranged
with Allison to take charge of the
provisions for Similkameen mining Party
rode to Ninds lot – Str Gov Douglas
arrived – Begbie Bushby Elliot Kelbs & Walker
arrived – all came upon me by surprise
Prisoner brought up in charge of Mc
Keon – Letters fr Col Moody Dewdney
Drake & Good – Sale postponed to 19th – July

Up at 6- Wrote a bundle of letters – Str
Started at 9½ – Elliot went to Yale
Begbie & Bushby to New Westminster – Held Court
Thompson fined $100 for selling whiskey
to Indians. Bullock commenced on
his own acct. To clear Ninds land.
Ladner arrived fr Yale & reported that
a number over 200 mules might
be expected in a short time – his
own train on the way
