specimens of coarse gold I have ever
witnessed taken fr Antler Creek, nugget
worth from $14 to $18. He gave glowing

Begbie Bought a young Bear & two
marten skins from an Indian. Walked

THURSDAY
Up early. Held Court at 9- Rode out
with Begbie on waggon road. The latter when
he had got a short distance beyond Thomas’s
house lost his temper & returned, but soon after
changed his mind & came on. Met J.G. at Sergt
Rogersons camp who returned to Hope with us
& dined at 6- Begbie sulky all the day.
Begbie, Grant & Gompertz played cards

FRIDAY
Fine morning. Str Gov Douglas arrived
English Mail Recd No 7- fr dearest Mamsey
How much I wish I could write.
No end of officials. Recd £800- for Road
Grant & Begbie dined – They played
cards with Gompertz & Moberly. Wrote
letters, & tried to write home but failed, saw
Mrs Charles on board at 11- on her way to
Victoria. Walked about till 1 AM – Begbie
& Grant slept on board also.

Worked in garden Dined with Charles
Preparing to go out for a ride when report
arrived of Fred Wm Siegman being killed by
the falling of a tree on Dewdneys road – soon
after he was carried in, literally smashed
to pieces. Held inquest, Verdict accidental
death. Paid Batieste for Begbie $10.00
Dewdney Gompertz & Charles spent the
day evening.

Recd Trading licenses. Capt Dawson

Mashell, cought 6 small trout, bad sport
Worked in the garden Pringle Gompertz &
Charles spent the evening slight difference of
opinion between the latter. Three squaws
arrested for drunkenness. Read, & turned in at 12-

TUESDAY
Fine morning Up at 7- rather seedy
& could not sleep – very warm day. Held
Court at 11- Busy in office. Dined
at three oclock. Thunder storm heavy rain
& blowing a fearful hurricane – trees
blown down in all directions, one
of the bullocks employed on the waggon
road killed by the falling of a tree. Fine
evening planted out cabbages. Spent
the evening at Pringles – Pitman & Charles.

WEDNESDAY
Beautiful day. Settled with Moberly in full
paying him $294 This included Dewdneys
private acct $295. Moberly & Charles
dined – rode to Dallas lake. Pringle
& Charles spent the evening. The former
is full of grievances as ever.
Horrid lonely and dissatisfied
Bad head ache
Turned in at 1- AM

THURSDAY
Up at 5 – Dark morning threatning
rain – breakfast at the Fort held
court. Rode with Charles to the
Lake house. The road literally covered
in many places impassable fr the number
of trees down – dined at 12 with Palmer
& the Doctor. Arrived at Hope at 6- Found
the Douglas had just arrived – a bundle of officials
Commeline with letters fr H.E. his traps
McKay arrived per the Douglas. Commeline talked

FRIDAY
Up at 5- Beautiful morning. Wrote
letters to H.E. Col Moody – Luard, Good, Begbie
Hooper Spalding Burnaby – sent the
latter $100- which I owe him per [deletion] per
Commeline – also to Ker $100- lent –
Dined on board the St Douglas with
Capt Irving. Str left for Westminster
at 5- Commeline went down. Worked in
the Garden. Sat up late seedy &
very lonely

SATURDAY
Up early. McKay went to Yale with Alard &
returned in the evening. Worked in the garden
slight rain all day. Held Court & wrote in
office. Walked with Cregie to Ninds land but
did not succeed in making a bargain with George
Matson. Pringle Charles & McKay spent the
evening – not in very good humour to receive
them. Sat up late till 12- cant help thinking of
home –

SUNDAY
Up at 6- Beautiful morning – read. Service at
11- 11- present Collection $1-25. Sermon fr
the Epistle of the day. Remained in house tried to
write home but could not – how well I remember
this day three years, & all that has since occurred
but how different every thing appears now, I am
perfectly miserable – would to God I could go away
I cannot do any thing & am sure to get into trouble
No evening service. Walked to the Lake. Read
& spent a truly lonely evening – turned in at 12-

MONDAY
Up at 6- Heavy rain. Prepared to start to explore the B. B. trail with
McKay but could not go it rained so heavily.
Dined at the Fort & started with McKay at
4 O.C.in a regular downpour, reached Gold
flat at 9- P.M. where we found out
Indians encamped. Turned in at 10
but could not sleep – all night thinking
of home. ———————– I cannot
bear to write on this subject though I cannot
keep my thoughts in any other direction

TUESDAY
Very wet morning & mountains covered with
mist – decided on returning to Hope as
prospects in such weather is impossible
Reached Hope at 1- P.M. dined at the Fort
Wrote in office – & working in garden
Pringle came bothering in his usual melan
choly mood. Charles & McKay spent the
evening. Commenced “Adam Bede” by George
Elliot – sat up till 1- AM – took a turn
in the veranda beautiful night –

canoe with Charles & McKay & crossed to
Cregies land afterwards to Greenwood Island
bought some cabbages lettices, & vetches for
the horse. Did not turn in till 12-

who died at 4- AM – $31- in dust & some
provisions – supposed to have a large sum

Steamer expected but did not come
Jno Rosker intered – service read by Pringle
Posted No 11 to dearest Mamsey

FRIDAY
Up at 4- Steamer Douglas arrived at
6- but no English mail – a heap of
officials most of which I answer, Str
left at 9 – intending to return by Douglas
Held Court. Rode out to Beaver lake
had some good fishing, notwithstanding
a good deal of rain & a heavy thunder
storm. Supped a[t] Holmes camp – got back
to Grants tent at 10- – turned in a 1- OC
heavy rain during the night.

1861-06-29
SATURDAY
Up at 6- spent most of the day
on the works with Grant – Luff v. J.G.
have a slight difference of opinion about
keeping of horses. Went to fish with
them at 5- & killed between us 10¾
lbs of trout Supped at Holmes Camp
& started with Grant for Hope at 10½
walked the whole way & did not get
home till 1½ AM – Beautiful night

SUNDAY
Up late bad head ache late for Church
Attendance 8- Collection $2.00. Walked
with Grant. Ogden arrived having left
the Brigade at the second crossing of the
Quaquealla. Dined at 5 – Service at
7- attended. Mr Philips [illegible] letter
of introduction from the Bishop. Dewdney
spent the evening – sat up late, my
eyes very painful.
