Kathleen to Peter, Victoria, September 27, 1877

(*1)

Thursday September 27th

My dear Papa

We went to the Wards on Tuesday in the rain, and to-day Mrs. Ward came to see Mama, brought Cecil with her, and just as she was going Frank came into the room to say that Mrs. Ward’s horse had fit and could not be driven home. Mama wanted her to wait till Mr. Ellis came home but Mrs. Ward said that Mr. Ward would be frightend about her being out late so she left Cecil & walked home. Mr. Ellis took his cattle to be shod & that was why he was not at home when Mrs. Ward was here. Uncle John walked over hear to the cattle and they gone to town so he did not see them Arthur is here now, and Mama is writing to you I hope you will have good shooting & are quite well. I think Jack is quite well and Mama also, Frank has a bad cold and I have a little.

With love your affectionate daughter

Pussy O’Reilly.

*1 – 2020 – Both Frank and Kathleen’s letters mention a visit with the Wards and the Ellis’ cattle being “shod.” Despite the fact that both letters appear to be written on a Thursday, with separate dates, these are probably from the same year. This letter does not mention Mary Augusta, who died in 1876. September 27th was a Thursday in 1877.
