Letter No. 5, Victoria, November 29, 1869

(*11)

Bless God with me. My own beloved husband that in His great goodness He has again preserved me to you and our darling children. I am getting on as well as possible God is very good to me but I am very touchy this is the 7th day that I have lain here & I do miss you & sorely. I have an anxious time what with one thing & another

I hardly slept for four days & nights I was so anxious about Fank & Puss & the ‘’new baby’’ as Frank calls it, was decidedly cross until the fourth day when the natural food for it came now it is not hungry it is pretty good. Another worry to me was that the telegraph was not working & we could not communicate with you my own dear love & I longed so that you

should know that the worst was over a bad worst it was dearie. I assure you far more so then when Puss-pie was born. Both nurse and Dr. says I had a hard labour. I was very nervous when I woke on the Monday night about 1/2 past 12 & found that it was coming on I was lonely for you then as you may well know. John did not lose a

moment & nurse & Dr. Were here in good time. Mama got up at once & came into my room & when Mrs. B called. They moved the Pussy’s cot to Mama’s room & I carried the ‘’Ala’’ boy & put him into Granny’s bed it was almost too much for me for by that time the pains were getting bad. When it came was the worst. I had the Cramp in my right leg & most fearfully it was awful from my hip

to my toes & directly the pains came with it came that dreadful cramp. Dr. H. Was very kind & attentive & Mrs. Bond has taken great care of me. I am quite satisfied with her. John has been very kind to the little ones playing with them & yesterday they dined with him. Mama, I am sorry to say is

laid up with toothache we be which makes it more dull as I have no one but the nurse to speak with. They would not let me write last time. The nurse said I need not. Many loving thanks for your dear letters, all received safely. They have been a very great comfort to me. I know you will write I must not say more, but will please God, send you a longer one next time.
God Bless & keep you my own beloved, & bring you safe back to me. Your loving dutiful wife

Carry
